PM Modi Urges Greater University Engagement and Tech Integration in Policymaking

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday stressed the need for greater engagement between government departments, universities, and young people to integrate fresh perspectives into the policymaking process. Chaired by the Prime Minister, the third high-level meeting with secretaries focused on breaking down organizational silos and fostering unconventional ideas through broader outreach.

The Prime Minister's remarks follow recent nationwide student protests over the NEET paper leak at Jantar Mantar and other locations last month. Following the demonstrations, which resulted in the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the Prime Minister reached out to students via social media on multiple occasions.

During the meeting with government secretaries, Modi outlined the future action agenda for various ministries, focusing specifically on infrastructure, connectivity, security, and external affairs. He emphasized the necessity of effective data utilization and artificial intelligence while maintaining appropriate human intervention and judgment. Furthermore, he categorized data as a national asset and called for standardized solutions to improve data interoperability across different applications.

Addressing organizational efficiency, Modi stated that bureaucratic silos represent a mindset challenge rather than merely an administrative issue, urging officials to take full ownership of their duties. He also encouraged senior officers to cultivate informal engagements with junior colleagues to strengthen networks across different cadres.

The discussions also covered research and innovation, with particular emphasis on enhancing the global competitiveness of the defense sector. Turning to maritime infrastructure, Modi reiterated the shift from port development to port-led development, noting that shipbuilding has been granted infrastructure status. He stressed the importance of assessing whether intended objectives in the maritime sector are being met and called for improved connectivity between manufacturing units and export-oriented hubs.

During the session, government secretaries shared their practical experiences regarding sectoral priorities, emerging operational challenges, and implementation hurdles.
