TMT steel bar manufacturer Rhetan TMT has commenced power generation from its 1 MW captive ground-mounted solar project in Gujarat. Additionally, the company has received Bureau of Indian Standards certification for its premium-grade TMT bars, enabling supplies to government and PSU infrastructure projects.

Ahmedabad: Rhetan TMT, a manufacturer of TMT steel bars, has announced the commencement of power generation from its 1 MW captive ground-mounted solar power project located at its manufacturing facility in Gujarat.

With the solar power project now operational, the company expects it to meet the energy requirements of its manufacturing facility. The move contributes to the integration of renewable energy into its ongoing manufacturing operations.

Energy costs account for nearly 20 per cent of Rhetan TMT’s overall cost base. Consequently, the captive renewable power source is expected to support greater operational efficiency and cost competitiveness over the long term.

The successful operationalisation of the project reflects the company's focus on strengthening its manufacturing infrastructure and adopting sustainable energy solutions as part of its long-term business strategy.

Shalin Shah, Managing Director of Rhetan TMT, stated that the commissioning of the 1 MW captive solar power project is an important step in strengthening the energy economics of the company’s manufacturing operations. He noted that because energy represents a meaningful component of the cost base, the project provides greater control over key operating inputs while supporting sustainability objectives.

In addition to the renewable energy milestone, Rhetan TMT has received Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification for its premium-grade Fe500D, Fe550, and Fe550D TMT bars. This certification enables the company to supply these premium-grade products for government and Public Sector Undertaking (PSU) infrastructure projects across India.

Commenting on the product certification, Shalin Shah added that the BIS certification for these specific grades expands the company's ability to serve higher-value infrastructure requirements.

According to the management, these two developments—the operationalisation of the captive solar plant and the new product certifications—jointly strengthen manufacturing efficiency and product capabilities, providing a foundation for the company's next phase of growth.

"Controlling input costs is critical for manufacturing enterprises, especially when energy accounts for nearly a fifth of total expenses. Rhetan TMT's investment in a captive solar project demonstrates a pragmatic approach to margin protection through sustainability. Furthermore, securing Bureau of Indian Standards certification for premium grades opens up direct access to high-value government and PSU infrastructure contracts, positioning the company for steady scaling in a competitive market." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
