Connectivity solutions provider STL (NSE: STLTECH) announced key developments in its decarbonisation and Net-Zero strategy, highlighting transitions toward renewable energy and reduced carbon emissions across its manufacturing operations.
As part of its energy transition, the company has shifted a significant share of its electricity sourcing away from conventional fossil-fuel-based grid power to 100% green power generated from wind and solar sources. This transition applies to four manufacturing plants located in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (Aurangabad), Maharashtra. The shift was facilitated through the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). According to the company, this move is expected to deliver an estimated 65% market-based scope 2 emission reduction across participating optical fibre and optical fibre cable plants.
In addition to electricity sourcing, STL has integrated 100% green hydrogen into its glass manufacturing operations. Glass production is a critical, energy-intensive stage in optical fibre manufacturing that has historically relied on conventionally produced hydrogen and oxygen, allowing the company to address a difficult-to-abate segment of its supply chain.
The company's sustainability initiatives also extend to product-level carbon footprint reductions. STL reported that the carbon footprint for its G.657.A2 optical fibre, which is utilized in data centers and telecommunication networks, has decreased by approximately 80%. Emissions for the product dropped from 4.7 kg CO₂e per fibre kilometre to 0.9 kg CO₂e per fibre kilometre. Furthermore, the company maintains a portfolio of Eco-labelled Certified Optical Products.
To address operational emissions outside manufacturing, STL updated its corporate mobility policy. The revised company car policy introduces dedicated incentives and enhanced limits for employees opting for electric and hybrid vehicles, aiming to systematically lower its scope 3 operational carbon footprint.
Commenting on the sustainability updates, Rahul Puri, CEO of ONB at STL, stated that the decarbonisation efforts represent a set of connected decisions spanning facility power sources, product materials, and employee policies, combining renewable energy, green hydrogen, and eco-labelled product innovation to advance a greener manufacturing ecosystem.
"STL's transition to 100% green power and the integration of green hydrogen in energy-intensive manufacturing processes demonstrate a structured approach to industrial sustainability. By directly addressing scope 2 emissions at key facilities and reducing product-level carbon footprints, the company is aligning its operational framework with broader environmental standards while meeting the sustainability requirements of modern telecom and data center infrastructure." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
