The Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) has announced a price reduction for its Sabari brand subsidised coconut oil, lowering the rate from ₹249 to ₹229 per litre across its outlets. The decision comes ahead of the Onam festival season to cater to increased consumer demand.
According to official sources, the price revision follows a ministerial decision and applies to a combination pack containing both subsidised and non-subsidised portions. Specifically, the price of the 500-ml subsidised portion has been reduced from ₹140 to ₹110. To purchase the subsidised stock, consumers are required to produce a valid ration card.
Industry participants have shared mixed reactions to the intervention. The Cochin Oil Merchants Association (COMA) stated that the price reduction is unlikely to cause significant concern among traders, as Supplyco traditionally adjusts prices during festival periods. However, COMA noted that the move could impact domestic coconut oil consumption, given that open market retail prices are currently hovering around ₹300 a litre.
COMA president Thalath Mahmood stated that the coconut oil market remains steady, with wholesale prices at approximately ₹280 a litre. Prices are projected to remain stable even after Onam, backed by an increased availability of copra.
K.K. Devraj, an industry consultant, noted that Supplyco’s intervention is expected to help curb the upward trajectory of retail prices. He alleged that while Kerala experienced a favourable coconut harvest this season, traders from other states resorted to hoarding, which created an artificial price rise during the Onam period and pushed retail prices past ₹300 a litre. Devraj described the reduction to ₹229 a litre as a welcome move that will offer relief to households.
At the same time, Devraj cautioned that the government intervention could place local coconut oil millers under pressure. Millers currently hold copra purchased at higher rates, making their finished products more expensive in the retail market. He also urged the government to strengthen measures against the sale of spurious coconut oil, warning that vested interests might attempt to undercut Supplyco's pricing by distributing adulterated goods.
"State-led market interventions during peak festival seasons play a crucial role in managing consumer inflation and protecting household budgets against artificial price surges. While such steps provide immediate relief to buyers and help stabilize demand, policymakers must carefully balance these measures to prevent undue margin pressure on local manufacturers and millers who hold higher-cost inventory. Ensuring fair market competition and curbing adulteration remain critical challenges for sustaining long-term market stability." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
