Tamil Nadu is emerging as a vital market for the six-year-old electric two-wheeler manufacturer BGauss, driven by the state's established automotive ecosystem, expanding EV adoption, and growing reach into Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns.
According to Hemant Kabra, Founder and Managing Director of BGauss, the company has sold approximately one lakh scooters across India to date. Roughly 20 per cent of these sales, spanning both business-to-business (B2B) and business-to-consumer (B2C) segments, originate from Tamil Nadu.
The company currently operates 29 active dealerships across the state, with each location supported by a dedicated workshop. BGauss retails models including the BG Oowah, BG RUV 350, and BG Max C12, with price points starting above ₹1.22 lakh. Nationally, the firm recorded sales of 5,518 electric scooters in July.
Kabra noted that Tamil Nadu presents a distinctive advantage by combining a large two-wheeler market with a deep automotive manufacturing and engineering foundation. Cities such as Chennai, Hosur, Krishnagiri, and Coimbatore provide vital manufacturing capabilities, a robust supplier base, and technical talent, which collectively bolster confidence among customers, dealers, and financing partners.
While urban centers like Chennai and Coimbatore remain significant hubs for electric vehicle adoption, demand is increasingly moving beyond major cities. BGauss stated that the presence of dependable dealerships and reliable service support acts as a primary catalyst for adoption in semi-urban and smaller markets.
Consumer behavior in the state is also shifting. Buyers are increasingly evaluating electric scooters as practical alternatives to conventional petrol two-wheelers rather than experimental technology. Key purchase considerations include real-world driving range, service accessibility, battery warranties, financing options, and overall ownership costs.
In larger urban areas, electric vehicles are commonly acquired either to replace existing petrol scooters or to serve as additional household vehicles, driven by daily commuting economics and commercial applications such as food and grocery delivery. Conversely, in smaller and semi-urban markets, purchasing decisions are heavily influenced by the presence of a trusted local dealer and accessible financing support, indicating that network expansion and consumer adoption grow in tandem.
"The growth of electric two-wheeler adoption in regional markets like Tamil Nadu highlights a shift toward practical, utility-driven mobility solutions. For companies operating in this sector, regional success is no longer just about product pricing, but heavily relies on building a robust local network of dealerships, accessible service infrastructure, and reliable financing partners. Establishing trust at the ground level in Tier-2 and Tier-3 towns is essential for long-term scalability and sustained consumer adoption in the Indian electric vehicle market." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
