NEW DELHI: In a landmark development for the South Asian telecommunications and satellite communication landscape, Nelco, a prominent satellite communication service provider under the aegis of the Tata Group, has announced a strategic partnership and an investment of USD 20 million (approximately Rs 191.2 crore) in US-based Lunar Holdco, Inc., which operates commercially as Elveo Mobile. This high-stakes strategic move is principally aimed at introducing next-generation Direct-to-Device (D2D) and Internet of Things (IoT) satellite connectivity to India and the broader South Asian markets.
According to regulatory filings submitted by Nelco, the capital injection represents a calculated bet on the future of global telecommunications, where seamless terrestrial and extraterrestrial network integration is becoming paramount. Lunar Holdco was officially formed in January 2026 following a high-profile merger between industry players Lynk Global and Omnispace. Operating currently as a pre-revenue enterprise, Lunar Holdco is heavily invested in building out a comprehensive, global S-band Non-Geostationary Satellite Orbit (NGSO) network designed to handle massive volumes of enterprise and consumer traffic without relying on conventional terrestrial cellular towers.
Elking deeper into the operational framework of the partnership, Nelco Managing Director and CEO P J Nath emphasized that Direct-to-Device connectivity constitutes the definitive next growth wave for the global satellite communication sector. By leveraging Elveo’s sophisticated network architecture, Nelco aims to unlock unbroken coverage and tap into fresh commercial verticals across India, neighboring South Asian countries, and select global enterprise segments.
The newly forged alliance will empower Nelco to deliver advanced connectivity and compute solutions directly from Elveo’s constellation of satellites to critical industry verticals. These include automotive, maritime, energy, and government sectors. Industry analysts note that this technological leap is uniquely positioned to bridge persistent coverage gaps, enabling robust enterprise-grade use cases such as advanced automotive telematics, real-time fleet tracking, critical infrastructure monitoring, and rapid-response disaster management frameworks where standard cellular infrastructure typically fails.
Ramu Potarazu, CEO of Elveo Mobile, expressed strong optimism regarding the synergy between the two entities. Potarazu highlighted that the collaboration effectively extends Elveo’s adaptable, intelligent, and resilient communications infrastructure into fresh enterprise markets—spanning telecom, infrastructure, and other mission-critical domains. Furthermore, Elveo anticipates not only serving the massive Indian consumer and enterprise base through Nelco's established local footprint but also potentially scaling its strategic technical partnerships to encompass wider Tata Group entities operating on a global scale.
Market observers have pointed out that while the USD 20 million infusion is substantial, it does not grant Nelco controlling stakes or managerial dominance over Lunar Holdco, signaling a partnership built on mutual technological dependency and market access rather than outright acquisition. As India accelerates its space economy reforms and opens up its satellite communications sector to foreign direct investment and private participation, this strategic collaboration between Nelco and Elveo Mobile sets a formidable benchmark for how legacy conglomerates and specialized deep-tech global entities can join forces to redefine connectivity for millions.
"The strategic investment of $20 million by Tata Group’s Nelco into Elveo Mobile marks a definitive turning point for India’s telecommunications and deep-tech ecosystem. As the boundaries between terrestrial cellular networks and satellite communications continue to blur, Direct-to-Device (D2D) technology is emerging as the ultimate frontier for closing remote coverage gaps and servicing mission-critical enterprise sectors like automotive telematics and maritime logistics. By aligning with a forward-thinking pre-revenue innovator like Lunar Holdco, Nelco is not merely participating in the next wave of the satcom market; it is actively positioning the Tata Group to command the future of ubiquitous, borderless connectivity across India and South Asia. This collaboration exemplifies how legacy Indian enterprises can successfully orchestrate global deep-tech partnerships to build resilient, future-proof digital infrastructure." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
