NEW DELHI — UltraTech Cement, an Aditya Birla Group company, has announced plans to expand its electric vehicle fleet in logistics operations to more than 600 EV trucks by the end of this year.
The company has secured service contracts with major EV prime mover manufacturers, including Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, IPLTech, Energy in Motion, and Sany. The deployment also involves their subsidiaries and other third-party logistics providers.
According to the company, the fleet of 600 EV trucks is expected to transport approximately five million tonnes of clinker and other key materials annually. Operations will span across seven states, namely Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, and Odisha.
UltraTech stated that once the fleet is fully operational, it will enable a net annual carbon reduction of over 1.17 lakh tonnes. The transition is projected to displace the equivalent of 39 million litres of diesel per year.
KC Jhanwar, Managing Director of UltraTech Cement, stated that the company aims to expand sustainability beyond its manufacturing plants by adopting greener logistics solutions. He noted that the large-scale transition supports the organization's focus on decarbonising the value chain and its commitment to achieving Net Zero.
UltraTech was an early adopter of green logistics in India, having deployed CNG trucks in 2021 followed by electric trucks in 2024. The company currently operates a total of over 850 trucks under its green logistics operations, combining both CNG and electric vehicles.
With a grey cement capacity exceeding 200 MTPA in India, UltraTech manages one of the country's extensive logistics networks. The company's electrification strategy encompasses its entire supply chain, covering mine-to-plant movement as well as inter-plant transport of clinker and raw materials.
"UltraTech Cement's decision to scale its electric vehicle fleet to over 600 trucks highlights a practical shift toward sustainable supply chain management in heavy industries. By integrating green logistics across major states and partnering with established manufacturers, the company is systematically addressing heavy transport emissions. For the broader industrial sector, this move demonstrates that large-scale decarbonisation in logistics is both viable and essential for long-term operational efficiency and environmental compliance." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
