Multinational water technology firm VA TECH WABAG has entered the Kuwaiti market by securing a contract for the Doha SWRO Desalination Plant. The project will be executed through a joint venture and includes a 36-month construction period followed by a five-year operation and maintenance phase.

NEW DELHI — Multinational water technology company VA TECH WABAG has signed a contract for the Doha SWRO Desalination Plant with Recarbonation System – Stage II in Kuwait, marking the company's debut in the country.

The order was awarded in June 2026 by Kuwait's Ministry of Electricity, Water & Renewable Energy, and the project work is set to commence now. According to the company, this mega project strengthens its footprint across the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region.

The project is being undertaken on a Design, Build, and Operate basis. It will be delivered through an unincorporated joint venture led by WABAG alongside Heavy Engineering Industries & Shipbuilding Company K.S.C.

The facility will feature a capacity of 60 Million Imperial Gallons per Day (MIGD), which translates to approximately 272 Million Litres per Day (MLD). The plant integrates Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) technology with a Recarbonation System. The construction phase is scheduled to span 36 months, after which the consortium will manage a five-year Operation & Maintenance period.

Additionally, the facility's design incorporates on-site Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems to supply a portion of the plant's energy requirements. This integration aligns with Kuwait's clean-energy objectives and is intended to reduce the overall carbon footprint of the facility.

"Va Tech Wabag's entry into the Kuwaiti market through a major infrastructure project demonstrates the strong capabilities of Indian-rooted companies expanding internationally. Securing a large-scale Design, Build, and Operate contract backed by clean-energy integration highlights the growing global demand for sustainable water management solutions. This milestone significantly strengthens the company's position in the GCC region and sets a positive precedent for cross-border execution in the utility sector." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
