India is evaluating measures such as limited duty-free sugar imports and stricter stockholding limits for bulk traders. The steps aim to increase domestic supplies and cool down record-high sugar prices ahead of the upcoming festival season.

NEW DELHI: India is currently considering a series of regulatory measures, including permitting limited duty-free sugar imports and tightening stockholding limits for bulk traders, according to government and industry sources.

The policy deliberations come as domestic sugar supplies tighten across the country. Prices have climbed to record highs and are projected to remain elevated for at least the next three months.

Market demand is simultaneously gathering pace as the nation approaches the peak Indian festival season, adding further pressure to existing inventories and prompting government intervention to bolster supplies and stabilize pricing.

"The potential intervention by the government highlights the delicate balance required between managing domestic inflation and ensuring adequate supply during high-demand periods like the festival season. For businesses operating in food processing, retail, and commodities, monitoring regulatory adjustments regarding stock limits and import duties will be crucial for supply chain and margin management over the coming months." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
