Hyderabad-based pharmaceutical and biotechnology firm Laurus Labs announced its financial results for the second quarter of the current financial year ended September, reporting a significant rise in both revenue and net profit.
The company's total revenue increased by 33 percent to ₹2,206 crore, compared to ₹1,653 crore in the corresponding period of the previous financial year. Net profit more than doubled, reaching ₹441 crore for the quarter, up from ₹195 crore in the year-ago period.
Satyanarayana Chava, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Laurus Labs, stated that the company achieved a record quarter of growth in revenue and profits. He attributed the performance to the strength of the company's CDMO platform and its affordable medicines portfolio.
During the quarter, the company operationalized its first commercial-scale peptide plant in Vizag. Chava noted that capacity expansion is already underway to address the demand for peptide therapeutics, alongside targeted investments in oligonucleotides and peptide-resins technologies.
Alongside its financial results, Laurus Labs announced an agreement to acquire a 60 percent stake in Canada-based biotechnology company Galenvs Sciences at a pre-money valuation of $3.5 million. The proposed investment totals $3.75 million, which includes a primary infusion of $2.75 million.
Galenvs Sciences specializes in differentiated technology capabilities in oligonucleotides and precision magnetic nanoparticles. Jamal Daoud, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Galenvs Sciences, stated that combining the company's capabilities with Laurus's development and manufacturing infrastructure will create a platform to serve customers from early-stage development through scale-up and manufacturing.
Following the investment, Galenvs Sciences will continue under the ownership of Laurus Labs, with a focus on maintaining its scientific capabilities, technological expertise, and customer-centric approach.
"Laurus Labs' Q2 performance highlights the effectiveness of scaling specialized manufacturing capabilities alongside strategic cross-border acquisitions. By investing in niche technologies like oligonucleotides and precision magnetic nanoparticles through the acquisition of Galenvs Sciences, the company is positioning itself to capture growing global demand in advanced therapeutics. For businesses looking to scale in the life sciences sector, integrating targeted technology acquisitions with robust internal manufacturing infrastructure remains a sound strategy for long-term growth and market expansion." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
