A recent LinkedIn report reveals that 83 percent of Gen Z professionals in India hesitate to network due to fear of being judged, bothering others, or sounding inauthentic. Meanwhile, platform data shows that applicants with inside connections are significantly more likely to secure employment.

A new report released by professional networking platform LinkedIn indicates that a majority of Gen Z professionals in India are missing out on career opportunities because of hesitation around networking.

According to the findings, 83 percent of Gen Z professionals in India hesitate to interact or build connections with individuals who could potentially assist them in their career progression. The survey highlights specific barriers, with 44 percent citing a fear of being judged, 39 percent worried about bothering others, and 37 percent concerned about sounding inauthentic.

The data points to a distinct gap in professional outreach, even as 79 percent of Indian Gen Z respondents acknowledge the importance of professional relationships. The report shows that 52 percent are unsure how to initiate networking, while 53 percent struggle to convert contacts into meaningful connections and worry about the associated costs.

Furthermore, 59 percent of Gen Z respondents stated that they have not received clear guidance on how to build professional relationships, forcing many to navigate the process independently without knowing who to approach, when to reach out, or what to say.

The report contrasts this apprehension with the willingness of older generations to assist newcomers. Up to 92 percent of Millennials and 95 percent of Gen X professionals indicated that they would be willing to help someone at the start of their career, even if they did not personally know them.

Platform metrics underscore the tangible value of networking in the hiring process. LinkedIn data indicates that Indian job applicants who have an inside connection are nearly 8.5 times more likely to get hired compared to those without one.

Commenting on the findings, Nirajita Banerjee, LinkedIn Career Expert and India Senior Managing Editor, noted that relationship-building is becoming as vital as technical skills in evolving career landscapes. She added that networking does not require cold outreach, and that small, gradual interactions help build trust and expand professional circles over time.

The underlying survey was conducted by Censuswide between July 20 and August 11, 2026. It encompassed 18,050 full-time and part-time workers aged 18 to 80 across multiple global markets, including India, the UK, the US, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Singapore, Australia, Brazil, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia.

"Networking is a critical pillar of professional growth, particularly in the modern startup ecosystem where referrals and inside connections significantly improve hiring outcomes. This report highlights a crucial mentorship and confidence gap among young professionals. Startups and business leaders must actively create approachable environments to help Gen Z overcome these communication barriers, turning raw talent into connected industry contributors." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
