State-run power generator NTPC posted a 41 percent year-on-year jump in consolidated net profit to ₹7,351 crore for the second quarter of FY27, driven by higher power generation and operational efficiencies. The company also declared a first interim dividend of ₹3 per share.

State-run power generator NTPC has reported a consolidated net profit of roughly ₹7,351 crore for the second quarter of fiscal year 2027, marking an increase of almost 41 percent compared to the same period in the previous year. The company attributed the growth to improved power generation and operational efficiency measures.

On a sequential basis, the net profit of India's largest power generator rose by 7 percent. The Maharatna company registered a consolidated total income of around ₹54,716 crore in Q2 FY27, showing an increase from ₹51,142 crore reported in Q1 FY27 and ₹45,262 crore in Q2 FY26.

Alongside income growth, NTPC's consolidated total expenses also rose, reaching ₹48,059 crore in Q2 FY27 compared to ₹43,130 crore in Q1 FY27 and ₹40,218 crore in Q2 FY26. Specifically, fuel costs increased to ₹28,628.19 crore from ₹23,062.34 crore during the corresponding period.

According to the company, its strong performance was further supported by a 73 percent increase in profits from subsidiary companies. Profits from subsidiaries rose to ₹1,990 crore in Q2 FY27, up from ₹1,149 crore in Q2 FY26.

For the half-year ended September 30, 2026, NTPC's cumulative consolidated net profit increased to ₹14,247 crore from ₹11,334 crore in the corresponding period of the previous year, reflecting a growth of almost 26 percent.

Operational metrics for the first half of FY27 indicated that NTPC's coal stations achieved a plant load factor (PLF) of 75.11 percent. This performance remained significantly higher than the overall national coal PLF average of 68.35 percent.

In addition to financial and operational results, the Board of Directors of NTPC has declared the first interim dividend at the rate of 30 percent of the paid-up equity share capital, amounting to ₹3 per share for FY27.

"NTPC's Q2 FY27 results highlight the impact of consistent operational efficiency and strong subsidiary performance on state-run enterprises. Achieving a plant load factor well above the national average demonstrates robust asset utilization in the power sector. For large public enterprises, maintaining cost discipline alongside revenue growth is essential to sustaining profitability and delivering steady returns to shareholders, as reflected in their interim dividend announcement." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
