OpenAI has confirmed the departure of Chris Malone, an executive who helped oversee the AI developer's data center buildout. Malone, who originally joined the company as the head of data centers, is no longer with the organization.
An OpenAI spokesperson addressed the exit by noting that the company reorganized its infrastructure organization earlier this year to support the scale and pace of its work. The spokesperson added that a strong, deeply experienced data center team remains in place with clear leadership and technical expertise to execute the company's plans.
Malone's departure adds to a series of executive changes and exits at the ChatGPT maker over recent months. Other recent departures include longtime executive Brad Lightcap, Fidji Simo, who oversaw much of OpenAI's core business, and former product chief Kevin Weil.
According to reports, OpenAI has made leadership changes within its infrastructure team by appointing a chief technology officer to lead computing capacity. The company is also reviving certain data center initiatives, including projects involving the leasing of entire facilities, with other individuals leading those efforts in Malone's place.
In addition to infrastructure changes, OpenAI has experienced shifts in its revenue and business leadership. The company recently named its second new chief revenue officer in less than a year, bringing in Dali Rajic from Alphabet Inc.-owned Wiz. Rajic succeeds Denise Dresser, who had been hired for the CRO role in December.
"Leadership transitions and infrastructure reorganizations are common during periods of rapid operational scaling, particularly in high-demand sectors like artificial intelligence where data center capacity is critical. For high-growth startups managing massive compute requirements, maintaining continuity in technical execution during executive shuffles is essential to sustaining long-term business momentum." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
