Renault has officially introduced the all-new Duster hybrid to the Indian market, marking a significant revival for the nameplate that originally laid the foundation for the monocoque SUV segment in 2012. Following extensive testing and engineering development, the new model aims to address modern emission standards while offering an alternative to traditional diesel powertrains.
The vehicle features a completely revised exterior design while maintaining the wide stance and muscular proportions associated with the original Duster. Notable exterior elements include 18-inch wheels and a front grille featuring illuminated 'DUSTER' lettering upon locking and unlocking. Inside, the cabin incorporates brown leatherette upholstery for the hybrid variant, physical controls, and an integrated touchscreen infotainment system, though minor ergonomic compromises include out-of-sight seat ventilation buttons and a somewhat fussy instrument cluster user interface.
Under the hood, the Duster hybrid is equipped with an E-Tech 160 strong hybrid system. This setup pairs a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine with two electric motors—a primary traction motor and a high-voltage starter-generator—powered by a 1.4kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The system delivers a total output of 157.8 bhp to the front wheels via a clutchless multi-mode automatic gearbox featuring four ICE ratios and two electric ratios. According to Renault, the vehicle achieves a 0 to 100 kph acceleration time of 9.6 seconds.
Practicality has seen some trade-offs due to the hybrid architecture. Luggage space is reduced from 518 litres to 372 litres to accommodate the battery positioned beneath the boot floor. Consequently, Renault supplies the vehicle with an intricate puncture repair kit, offering a space-saver spare tire strictly as a paid extra. Rear-seat space is also somewhat constrained for taller adult occupants.
On the road, the hybrid system allows for silent, electric-only operation at speeds up to approximately 50 kph. Renault reports an ARAI-tested fuel efficiency figure of 29 kpl, with mixed driving cycles yielding an indicated 19.5 kpl. Paired with a 50-litre fuel tank, the vehicle provides an extensive driving range.
The Renault Duster hybrid is available in two introductory variants: the Evolution, priced at ₹16.99 lakh, and the Emotion, priced at ₹19.69 lakh (all prices ex-showroom).
"The re-entry of the Renault Duster into the Indian market with a strong hybrid powertrain highlights how legacy automotive brands are adapting to stringent emission norms and evolving consumer preferences. While the vehicle faces practical compromises in boot capacity and rear-room space, its aggressive introductory pricing and fuel-efficiency metrics position it as an interesting contender in a competitive segment. For the broader automotive sector, balancing complex alternative powertrains with consumer utility remains a critical strategic priority." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
