MUMBAI — HDFC Bank shares touched a fresh 52-week low of ₹698.50 on Tuesday before moving to trade flat, as market participants continued to evaluate the succession process at the private lender.
The stock was trading at ₹711.90 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) at 11:56 am, compared to its previous close of ₹709. Order book data around the time showed a buy quantity of 20,27,923 shares against a sell quantity of 22,88,611 shares.
The current downward movement follows a 1.6 per cent decline in the bank's shares on Monday. Investor sentiment has been weighed down by Sashidhar Jagdishan's decision not to seek another term as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, shifting market focus heavily toward the bank's upcoming leadership transition.
Market performance metrics indicate broader short-term pressure on the stock. HDFC Bank's absolute returns showed a decline of 2 per cent over the past week, while the stock dropped nearly 5 per cent over the trailing month. On a year-to-date basis, the stock has experienced a correction of over 28 per cent.
Despite the near-term volatility and downward price movement, institutional brokerages have largely retained their positive view on the fundamentals of the country's largest private sector bank. Market attention remains focused on the identification and appointment of the next chief executive to lead the institution forward.
"Leadership transitions in large financial institutions naturally create short-term market anxiety, as seen in HDFC Bank's recent stock movement. However, the fundamental strength of a premier institution usually remains intact beyond individual tenures. For long-term investors and businesses watching the banking sector, the key takeaway is the importance of a transparent and well-managed succession plan to restore stability and maintain investor confidence." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
