External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar addressed the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Atlanta, Georgia, emphasizing the need for transparent, diversified, and resilient global supply chains. The meeting concluded with a dedicated plenary session on supply chains, hosted by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
During the session, EAM Jaishankar stated that securing and ensuring the resilience of supply chains is central to the stability of the global economy. He highlighted that supply chains remain threatened by pandemics, conflicts, climate events, and operational mishaps, making diversification and de-risking critical.
The External Affairs Minister called for the de-concentration of the global economy and the optimization of production across various geographies. He noted that these measures would discourage the weaponization of finance, resources, production, and market share, while advocating for the de-politicization of markets.
Furthermore, Jaishankar stressed that G20 countries must resist predatory practices, target competition fairly, and promote the right to industrialize. He urged member nations to reconcile their national interests for collective benefit by fostering multiple supply chains and establishing a multi-stakeholder global economy.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio echoed similar sentiments, noting that secure supply chains are essential for sustained economic growth. Rubio emphasized that critical trade routes, including the Strait of Hormuz and the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, must remain secure and open to commerce, alongside efforts to strengthen and expand critical mineral supply chains.
Earlier on the sidelines of the G20 event, EAM Jaishankar participated in the Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting alongside US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Japan's Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi, and Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong. This marked the third Quad ministerial meeting of the year, following previous interactions in New Delhi and Manila.
Discussions during the Quad meeting focused on deepening cooperation for supply chain resilience, ensuring energy security, securing critical minerals and technology, and countering non-market practices and economic stresses in the Indo-Pacific region. Additionally, EAM Jaishankar held bilateral discussions with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, addressing multilateral issues, the Ukraine conflict, and the situation in the Gulf.
"Global supply chain resilience and market transparency directly impact international trade, manufacturing costs, and the operational stability of businesses worldwide. For enterprises, particularly in growing markets like India, diversified and secure supply chains reduce vulnerability to geopolitical conflicts, climate events, and economic disruptions. Policymakers focusing on de-risking and de-concentrating production create a more predictable environment for cross-border commerce and long-term industrial planning." — Dr. Shishir Gupta, Founder & CEO, StartupLanes
