Tamil Nadu CM Inaugurates Pinhole Pupilloplasty Centre at Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital in Chennai

CHENNAI — Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Thiru C. Joseph Vijay inaugurated the world's first Pinhole Pupilloplasty Centre at Dr Agarwals Eye Hospital on TTK Road in Alwarpet, Chennai, on Thursday.

The inauguration ceremony took place in the presence of hospital leadership, including Prof. Dr. Amar Agarwal, Chairman; Dr. Athiya Agarwal, Director; Dr. Adil Agarwal, Chief Executive Officer; Dr. Manoj Khatri, Director of Vitreo-Retinal Services; and Dr. S. Soundari, Regional Head of Clinical Services.

The newly established, dedicated centre will focus on Pinhole Pupilloplasty (PPP), a microsurgical technique developed by Dr. Amar Agarwal. The procedure is designed to improve the quality of vision in appropriately selected patients suffering from conditions such as corneal scars, irregular corneas, high corneal aberrations, and certain post-surgical optical distortions.

Explaining the medical approach, the hospital stated that instead of replacing the cornea, PPP modifies the eye's optical system by creating a small, precisely centered pupillary aperture. This smaller aperture functions by blocking scattered and distorted light rays while allowing better-focused rays to reach the retina. According to the hospital, the advanced procedure has already provided vision to over 5,000 patients to date.

Beyond patient care, the facility is structured to function as a broader educational and research hub. The institution has been active in expanding knowledge among medical professionals, with more than 50 ophthalmologists undergoing training through workshops and academic programmes every year.

Commenting on the broader scope of the facility, the hospital stated, “The Pinhole Pupilloplasty Centre at Alwarpet will serve not merely as a surgical facility but as a comprehensive programme encompassing advanced diagnostics, patient selection, surgery, postoperative assessment, long-term follow-up, research and ophthalmic training.”
